WHO WE ARE

Since 1986, Family Kitchen has been providing meals to our neighbors in Central Oregon.

Today, we provide over 20,000 meals per month and rely on the help of over 450 volunteers to make it happen. We're proud to be a part of this wonderful community.

Meet Olivia Townsend Parker

Family Kitchen is thrilled to have Olivia Townsend Parker join us as our Executive Director. She is an integral part of ensuring our success for years to come.

Olivia joins us as a professional in the world of nonprofits, fundraising, and hunger relief. Her most recent role was with the Oregon State University Foundation, but she’s spent much of her professional life with food banks across the country and has always had a passion for volunteering. Alleviating poverty and building community are two of her biggest passions, and she looks forward to incorporating those into her new role.

How is everyone’s 2025 going so far?

Lots of good things are happening here during this first month of the year at Family Kitchen, including more generous acts by our community partners! Please join us in showing appreciation for US Foods CHEF’STORE, Mt. Bachelor Play Forever, and Newport Avenue Market for their recent donations:

US Foods CHEF’STORE recently held their annual charity event, presenting the funds raised to Olivia for Family Kitchen! It was a great full-circle moment, as we shop at CHEF’STORE each week for many of the ingredients needed to make our meals! Thank you, CHEF’STORE!

Mt. Bachelor kindly selected Family Kitchen as one of three local nonprofits, along with Furnish Hope and The Giving Plate, to receive donations through their Play Forever program for the months of October, November, and December. Between donations made by Mt. Bachelor guests and the work done by the Mt. Bachelor team, each of us received $7,000 to use towards our operational costs, which means that so many of our neighbors will benefit from a warm meal, fresh groceries, and beautiful furniture thanks to this generosity. Thank you, Mt. Bachelor!

Newport Avenue Market has spent years advocating for access to fresh, nutritional food for members of our Central Oregon community through their Food for February program, and Family Kitchen is so grateful to be the recipient of the funds raised this year. By raising awareness in each of their stores, collecting donations from shoppers, and matching those donations themselves, they were able to raise a whopping $70,000 to help us feed others. This impact of this contribution will have far-reaching effects - thank you, Newport Avenue Market!

We know that 2025 has many more good things in store for Family Kitchen. We appreciate you and our other awesome community partners for being part of this journey ❤️

[POSITION FILLED!]

Our Meal Coordinators are the leads during our daily meal services. This role oversees weekly meal services in Bend from production, to serving, to clean up. Working with volunteer teams, you will support food prep, answer volunteer questions, uphold health and safety standards, oversee the dining room during meal service, and serve nutritious meals.

Required hours are:
Tuesdays, 2 - 6:30
Wednesdays, 8 - 2
Fridays, 8 - 2
Saturdays, 8 - 12:30
And 4 additional hours during the week

This is a part-time, hourly position totaling 25 hours / week.

$16-$19 per hour depending on experience
Employees are welcome and encouraged to eat during shifts.

As we kick off this holiday week, let’s take a moment to recognize some community partners who have recently donated time, money, goods and services to benefit those we serve! Their generosity is especially appreciated during this time of year when we recognize that we are all being pulled in many different directions. Thank you for keeping Family Kitchen and our vulnerable community members in mind as you give this season!

First up, we’d like to thank Pacific Power Foundation for their recent grant award to us. With their help, we are able to replace the grease traps in our kitchen. While this may not be a glamorous update, it’s an exceptionally necessary one! Thank you, PPF, for keeping us up and running to the highest standard!

Thank you to J-DUB for hosting their annual Breakfast with Santa event and including us in the festivities! It was wonderful to see so many from our community come out and give back while enjoying a meal together. Thank you as well to Katie Sox, who volunteered her photography services, for ensuring the magic was captured for the families who got to meet Santa.

Last but not least, we are so grateful for the Bombas Giving team for their donation of 3,000 pairs of socks to us. These will be in stocked in our kitchen for any of our diners who find themselves in need for warm, dry clothing this winter season. Things like socks might seem small, but they can make a huge difference!

We hope everyone is having a wonderful holiday season with friends and family. Thank you to all who have contributed to our mission with their donations of time, money, goods, and services! It all means so much and is invaluable in our goal to build a better community for all.

All are invited December 21st from 5–6p for an outdoor vigil to honor our community members who have died while experiencing homelessness in Central Oregon this year. We will remember those individuals who are known to us and hold space for those we couldn’t reach. The true count is unknown, as housing status is not included in data gathered when a person passes on. Service providers are currently finalizing the list of those whose lives have been lost this year.

Gather at Bend’s Drake Park on the rise to the right of the bandstand at 5p for hot cocoa and coffee. The service will begin at 5:15p.

This year marks the 34th anniversary of the National Coalition for the Homeless “Homeless Persons’ Memorial Day” and is the fourth event of this kind in Central Oregon. The event in Bend is a collaboration between The Peaceful Presence Project, Storydwelling, the Homeless Leadership Coalition, REACH, Family Kitchen, and Mosaic Community Health.

We are participating in several events this holiday season, each serving different purposes. Read on to find how to celebrate, give back, and reflect on this year in our Central Oregon community. 🎄🎁✨

BINGO with Bren: Bevel Brewing is kindly hosting BINGO on Mondays this month (9th, 16th, 30th) to support us here at Family Kitchen. Half of all proceeds will be donated to us, and the other half goes out as cash prizes for each round! Each BINGO card is $2, or you can purchase 6 for $10. Come for the friendly competition, stay for the awesome community of folk at Bevel!

Breakfast with Santa: Join us for a festive morning at J-DUB filled with holiday cheer and giving! Families are invited to bring their little ones for a delightful breakfast where kids eat free, and can get their photo taken with Santa! In the spirit of the season, J-DUB, participating families, and local restaurants will be gathering donations of cash and bulk food items to support Family Kitchen’s mission.

The Longest Night: All are invited to join this outdoor vigil to honor our community members who have died while experiencing homelessness in Central Oregon this year. We will remember those individuals who are known to us and hold space for those we couldn’t reach. Meet by the bandstand at Drake Park at 5pm. Cocoa, coffee, and candles will be provided. This event is a collaboration between The Peaceful Presence Project, Storydwelling, the Homeless Leadership Coalition, REACH, Family Kitchen, and Mosaic Community Health.

Rudy’s Markets (Newport Avenue Market, Oliver Lemon’s, Ollie’s Kitchen) continues to be an incredible community partner for us here at Family Kitchen. Most recently, they have selected us as their recipients for their Food for February fundraiser! When you shop at any of their store locations this month, you’ll have the opportunity to donate to us. At the end of the month, the donations will be matched, up to $32,500!

You might be wondering: where does February come in? Well, studies show that February is the hungriest month of the year, and Rudy’s Markets recognizes that it will affect members of our own community here in Central Oregon. They pass along the funds you help raise at the beginning of the year so that we can fight that hunger in February (and beyond!) by serving meals out of our three kitchens in Bend, Redmond, and Sisters.

Each year as the holiday season gets in full swing and the temperatures begin to drop, we notice an increase in the diners who join us for meals. Tori, our Operations Manager, notes that our dining room holds new significance when it’s not only a place to enjoy a meal and good company, but also a place to warm up for a couple of hours. We know that many of our diners face struggles outside of food insecurity, including having a safe, warm place to sleep each night, so being able to open our doors to them is incredibly important to us.

This winter, we’d be honored to have you volunteer, donate, and support our mission as we provide nutritious meals to everyone who shows up. Here’s how you can do so:

Volunteer - We need volunteers every day of the week to help us prep and serve meals! Check our last post or our website for more information on volunteer opportunities.

Donate - We are participants in this year’s Central Oregon Gives campaign. Visit the link in our bio to donate to us there! There are weekly perks and raffles for everyone who donates at least $25.

Support - Tell your friends about us! See if your company does matching donations! Visit us at a community event we’re attending! Drop off donations to our kitchen (warm clothes, hygiene products, sleeping gear, and more are all accepted)!

It’s an honor to share more community partners with you! These three organizations recently went above and beyond to help us fulfill our mission of providing nutritious meals to anyone in need in a safe and caring environment:

Central Oregon Association of Realtors provided Family Kitchen with a generous grant to go directly to production costs for our meals. This means that hundreds of neighbors will be fed this holiday season thanks to their contributions! COAR, we appreciate your continued support!

Immersion Brewing, and their amazing Events Coordinator Alyssa, kindly selected Family Kitchen as the nonprofit beneficiary of their annual Makers Market! The raffle of gift baskets they coordinated was awesome and we got to chat with so many of our community members about what FK does at the event! It was great to see how many people came out to support local artists. Thank you, Immersion and Alyssa!

Bevel Craft Brewing is hosting not one, but FOUR Bingo events in December that will benefit Family Kitchen via Bingo card sales and donations. Make sure to come out to Bevel on December 2nd, 9th, 16th, or 30th for good fun and a chance to raise some money during a critical time of year for us. All events are 6-8pm. We can’t wait, Bevel!

As the year begins to come to a close, we so appreciate those who are keeping Family Kitchen and our mission in mind. We couldn’t do what we do without you - thank you! ❤️

Family Kitchen is excited to invite you to apply for our Board of Directors! 2024 has been a year of growth and change for our organization, and now we are excited to have a few more key members join us for all that is to come in 2025 and beyond!

Family Kitchen is excited to have Allen join us as a Meal Coordinator in our Bend kitchen, ensuring smooth shifts for volunteers and exceptional service to our diners. He brings a decade of experience in the nonprofit world, having worked for the Marion Polk Food Share in Salem before moving to Bend two years ago. He loves the environment curated by volunteers and staffers in these organizations, especially when they have a passion for the nonprofit’s mission.

When he’s not at Family Kitchen, you can find Allen going on adventures around Central Oregon with his wife, dogs, and cat. They especially enjoy spending time at the lakes and love hosting family and friends in this beautiful place we call home! ❤️

When Clara first moved to Bend, she immediately knew she wanted to be involved with a local organization that was helping to meet peoples’ needs. She’s been a dedicated volunteer for us since then and we’re thrilled to announce that she’s now our Volunteer Coordinator!

Clara is looking forward to working directly with our network of 450+ volunteers and getting to know you all as she settles into this role. Please help us welcome her to the FK team! ❤️

New FK volunteer Jack Lindsey knows that after a long day at school, the easy thing to do would be to go home and relax. He admits the thought crossed his mind before his first dinner shift this week, but he decided to join us anyway. He ended up meeting new people, getting to work with his mom, serving desserts, and even learning how to make a signature Family Kitchen mocha. Jack’s contributions helped feed dozens of community members on a busy night in the kitchen.

Drawn in by his enthusiastic disposition, we asked Jack what he was enjoying most that night. He replied: “Seeing a bunch of different people is fun, and the best part about it is feeding people makes you feel good inside and I definitely want to do it again”. He wanted to encourage others to join our volunteer team as well, noting they’d be sure to have a good time and would leave wanting to volunteer again.

Family Kitchen is so excited to share that our beloved Tori has moved into a new role with us - Operations Manager! You’ll still see her around the kitchen during mealtimes and volunteer shifts, but her duties will be shifting from volunteer coordination to overseeing all of our day-to-day operations. We’re so grateful for all the hard work she puts in and her dedication to fulfilling our mission.

Organizations across Central Oregon continue to generously contribute toward our mission here at Family Kitchen! We’re so grateful to share three more of them with you who are making an impact in our community:

Resolve Physical Therapy is collecting donations from their patients this September to be donated to our diners. These donations include socks/underwear, sleeping bags, gently used clothes, camping fuel, and more, and will be incredibly helpful to our diners as the weather begins to cool with the changing of the seasons. Thank you, Resolve, for keeping the needs of our community members in mind!

The City of Sisters recently awarded Family Kitchen with a grant to assist in our search for an Executive Director. The funds ensure that we are able to use best practices in our search, as we know the impact of hiring the right individual will touch thousands of lives and influence our organization’s culture for years to come. Thank you to the City of Sisters for assisting us in this all-important process!

Crane Charitable Funds made a donation that will allow us to serve hundreds of meals to our diners! The foundation strongly believes in improving lives in the local community, and this gift will do just that. Thank you, Crane Charitable Funds, for your generosity!
